The Wreck of the Strathmore: taking the Survivors from the Island...1876. Creators: W. J. P. W. H. O
The Wreck of the Strathmore: taking the Survivors from the Island, from a sketch supplied by Mr. Spencer Joslen, 1876....the emigrant-ship Strathmore [was wrecked], in July last, on the remote and desolate Crozet Islands, in the southern part of the Indian Ocean...forty-four survivors...remained there seven months. It is by the sketches which Mr. Joslen, of Maidstone, a first-class passenger in the Strathmore...that we are enabled to show so many features of that adventurous experience...[The survivors were rescued] on Jan. 21, by the Young Phoenix, an American whaling-vessel, under the command of Captain Gifford. He deserves great praise for his kindness to these distressed people and for deciding at once to take them to the Mauritius, at the cost of losing his season's fishing'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Wreck of the Strathmore: taking the Survivors from the Island...1876" is a captivating engraving depicting a daring rescue operation in the Crozet Archipelago, in the southern part of the Indian Ocean. The image was created by W. J. P. W. H. O, based on sketches supplied by Mr. Spencer Joslen, a first-class passenger on the ill-fated RMS Strathmore. In July 1876, the emigrant-ship Strathmore was wrecked on the desolate and remote Crozet Islands, leaving forty-four survivors stranded. Mr. Joslen's sketches provide a unique insight into their harrowing experience, which is vividly portrayed in this engraving. The survivors are seen being taken to safety by a rescue launch, as they cling to ropes and climb the side of a rocky cliff. The drama of the scene is heightened by the presence of several other boats in the water, as well as the ominous cliffs and the vast expanse of the ocean in the background. The rescue was carried out by the Young Phoenix, an American whaling-vessel under the command of Captain Gifford. His kindness and compassion are evident in his decision to take the distressed people to Mauritius, despite the cost of losing his season's fishing. This engraving is a testament to the courage and determination of the rescuers, as well as the resilience of the survivors. It is a poignant reminder of the perils of the sea and the importance of human compassion in times of crisis. The Wreck of the Strathmore: taking the Survivors from the Island...1876" is a valuable historical document and a beautiful work of art, showcasing the skill and artistry of W. J. P. W. H. O and the dramatic events of that fateful day in 1876.
