EDITORS COMMENTS
York Hall," also known as the Captain George Preston Blow house, is a historic property located at Route 1005 and Main Street in Yorktown, Virginia. The house was originally built in 1738-1739 as the home of Thomas Nelson Jr., a prominent colonial figure. In 1914, the property was purchased by Captain George Preston Blow, and architectural firm Griffin & Wynkoop was commissioned to make additions to the 18th-century brick house. The landscape design was entrusted to Charles Freeman Gillette. The photograph, taken in the 1920s, captures the elegant charm of the property. The house, with its red clapboard siding and white trim, stands proudly against a backdrop of lush green gardens. The parterre garden, with its neatly trimmed hedges and colorful flowerbeds, leads to a winding path that invites visitors to explore further. A lantern, placed on the stone steps, adds an air of mystery and intrigue. The house's history is rich and varied. Thomas Nelson Jr. was a signatory to the Declaration of Independence and played a significant role in the Revolutionary War. Captain George Preston Blow, the house's 20th-century owner, was a successful businessman and philanthropist. The property has been preserved and is now a cherished piece of American heritage. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a renowned American photographer, captured this image in the 1920s. Her meticulous attention to detail and ability to convey the essence of a place is evident in this stunning photograph. The image is a testament to the enduring beauty of historic properties and the importance of preserving them for future generations.
