Chamberlain Square, Birmingham BL01421_A

CHAMBERLAIN SQUARE, Birmingham, West Midlands. This civic fountain was erected in 1880 by public subscription in gratitude for Joseph Chamberlain's time as mayor (1873-6). The architect was John Chamberlain, withs Barfield of Leicester, sculptor, and Salviati Burke & Co of Venice, mosaics. In the background are Mason College and the pubilc library, both of which have since been demolished. Photograph by Bedford Lemere circa 1890

This photograph shows the grand staircase of the building with decorative planting supplied by the nurseries of Fisher, Son and Sibray, possibly in preparation for the opening of the town hall by Queen Victoria on May 21st 1897. Clifton Suspension Bridge, Clifton, Bristol. View of the Clifton Suspension Bridge seen from the river bank below. It was designed in the 1830s and was originally intended entirely for horse-drawn carriages. It was completed in 1864 to designs by I K Brunel, and reused the links from Brunel's Hungerford Suspension Bridge in London which was demolished in 1861. Photographed by Eric de Mare in 1954
