St Mary-le-Bow was rebuilt by Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London in 1666. During the Second World War it was almost destroyed by bombing on 10th May 1941 with incendiary bombs causing a fire which sent the bells in its tower crashing down to the ground. Blitz Bomb Damage Destruction Loss And Loss And Destruction Parish Church Second World War Stuart

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the resilient spirit of St Mary-le-Bow Church amidst a backdrop of destruction. Standing tall in the City of London, this iconic parish church has weathered both natural and man-made disasters throughout its storied history. Rebuilt by the renowned architect Christopher Wren after the devastating Great Fire of London in 1666, St Mary-le-Bow faced another harrowing test during World War II. On that fateful day of May 10th, 1941, incendiary bombs rained down upon the cityscape, causing a catastrophic fire that brought the bells crashing to the ground. The toll on this historic landmark was immense. Yet, even amid such loss and destruction, hope prevailed. As depicted in this photograph taken by Charles William Prickett, we witness a post-war landscape where remnants of bomb damage surround St Mary-le-Bow Church. The tower stands defiantly against all odds while restoration efforts commence from 1956 onwards. This image serves as a poignant reminder not only of wartime resilience but also showcases how communities can come together to rebuild what was lost. It symbolizes strength and determination in face of adversity—a testament to human perseverance. St Mary-le-Bow Church remains an enduring symbol within London's skyline today—an architectural masterpiece that embodies both historical significance and unwavering resolve.
