CARLISLE CATHEDRAL, CARLISLE, CUMBRIA. A stonemason measuring and laying out blocks of stone on a template for the restoration of a window at Carlisle Cathedral.
This photograph is part of a batch taken by Laing to show restoration work being carried out using SBD Certite. In 1961, N M Phillips, the architect for Carlisle Cathedral started experimenting with the bonding material SBD Certite in the restoration of the cathedral. It was used on all but one of the decorated Gothic windows of the South Clerestory and by the time this photograph was taken, it was being used in the restoration of the north face of the cathedral. By using SBD Certite, Laing stonemasons were able to remove just the weathered surface of the stonework. New stone only two inches deep could be bonded to the old stone saving more of the original fabric of the building and cutting costs by a third

Cathedral Conservation Medieval People Renovation Stonemason Work
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of meticulous restoration work at Carlisle Cathedral in Cumbria. A skilled stonemason can be seen measuring and laying out blocks of stone on a template, as part of the cathedral's window restoration project. Taken by Laing, this photograph is one among many that document the use of SBD Certite, a revolutionary bonding material introduced by architect N M Phillips in 1961. The material was employed extensively in the restoration process, particularly on the South Clerestory's Gothic windows and later on the north face of the cathedral. The innovative use of SBD Certite allowed Laing stonemasons to remove only the weathered surface of the stonework, preserving more of the original fabric while significantly reducing costs. By bonding new stone just two inches deep onto old stone, they were able to achieve remarkable results without compromising historical integrity. This image not only showcases craftsmanship but also highlights conservation efforts undertaken to safeguard this medieval architectural gem. It serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and dedication towards preserving our rich heritage for future generations.
