EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the enchanting world of Arts and Crafts interior design in early 20th century Liverpool. The image showcases the library of Holmestead, a magnificent residence on North Mossley Hill Road, adorned with exquisite Pre-Raphaelite items that exude timeless beauty. One cannot help but be mesmerized by the intricate stained glass window depicting St Cecilia, created by none other than Morris & Co. , which bathes the room in a soft ethereal glow. The focal point of this literary haven is undoubtedly the breathtaking painting adorning the chimney breast - Gloria in Excelsis by Evelyn de Morgan. Its vibrant colors and celestial subject matter transport viewers to another realm altogether. As we explore further, our eyes are drawn to smaller works by Rosetti and another de Morgan artist, adding an extra layer of artistic brilliance to this already remarkable space. It is evident that every detail has been carefully curated to create an ambiance that celebrates creativity and craftsmanship. Photographed in July 1901 by H Bedford Lemere, this snapshot captures not only a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to the enduring allure of Edwardian-era interiors. With its rich history and undeniable aesthetic appeal, this photograph reminds us of how art can transcend time and continue to inspire generations long after it was created.
