Biplane flight AFL03_aerofilms_c169

De Havilland DH9s flying in formation. From a copy negative made in 1923. Designed in 1916 by Airco, it first saw action with the Royal Flying Corps over the Western Front in 1917, but the aircraft went out of service with the RAF in 1920. Large numbers were subsequently exported for use by Commonwealth Air Forces or were adapted for use by civilian air transport companies. Some adaptations remained in use until 1936. EDITORS COMMENTS

This photograph, AFL03_aerofilms_c169, showcases a formation of Biplanes in flight, a nostalgic reminder of aviation history. The De Havilland DH9s depicted in this image were designed by Airco in 1916 and made their debut with the Royal Flying Corps over the Western Front in 1917 during World War I. Despite being phased out of service with the RAF in 1920, these versatile aircraft found new life in the hands of Commonwealth Air Forces and were adapted for use by various military units. The DH9 biplanes in this image exude a sense of power and grace as they soar through the sky, their wings outstretched and propellers churning the air. The photograph, taken from an aerial perspective, offers a unique vantage point that highlights the intricate details of these historic aircraft. The image is a copy negative made in 1923, a testament to the enduring legacy of these early aviation pioneers. The De Havilland DH9 biplanes were designed for military use, but their utility extended beyond the battlefield. They were also adapted for use in civilian air transport companies, demonstrating their versatility and adaptability. This photograph captures a moment in time when aviation was still a new and exciting frontier, and the De Havilland DH9 biplanes were at the forefront of technological innovation. This photograph is part of the Aerofilms Collection held by Historic England, a treasure trove of aerial images that document the history of Britain from the air. The collection spans over 90 years, from the early days of aviation to the present day, and offers a unique perspective on the changing landscape of our world.
