Heathrow Express JLP01_11_63143_02

HEATHROW AIRPORT, HILLINGDON, HILLINGDON, GREATER LONDON. Passengers alighting from a train at platform 1 of the Heathrow Express rail link.
The Heathrow Express rail link was a £ 350m investment by the British Airports Authority aiming to raise the proportion of passengers travelling to Heathrow Airport by public transport from 34% to 50%. Built between 1995 and 1998, by 2001 it was carrying 14, 000 passengers a day taking an estimated 3, 000 cars off the roads to improve traffic congestion. High speed trains leaving every 15min complete the journey from Paddington Station in 15min. Balfour Beatty bored the 11km tunnels and Tarmac laid the track whilst Laing in a joint venture with N G Bailey Design were responsible for the installation of all mechanical and electrical services in the tunnels and the construction of two underground stations, one serving the Central Terminal Area for Terminals 1-3, the other serving Terminal 4

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling scene at platform 1 of the Heathrow Express rail link in Hillingdon, Greater London. Passengers are seen alighting from a train, their movements creating a dynamic blur that adds to the sense of movement and energy in the image. The Heathrow Express rail link was a significant investment by the British Airports Authority, costing £350 million. Its primary goal was to increase the proportion of passengers traveling to Heathrow Airport by public transport from 34% to 50%. Completed between 1995 and 1998, this project proved successful as by 2001, it was carrying an impressive daily average of 14,000 passengers. This not only provided convenience for travelers but also helped alleviate traffic congestion by taking approximately 3,000 cars off the roads. Operating high-speed trains departing every 15 minutes from Paddington Station, this efficient rail link completes the journey in just 15 minutes. The construction involved Balfour Beatty boring tunnels spanning over an impressive distance of 11 kilometers while Tarmac laid down tracks. Additionally, Laing collaborated with N G Bailey Design to install all mechanical and electrical services within these tunnels and construct two underground stations—one serving Terminals 1-3's Central Terminal Area and another dedicated solely to Terminal 4. This historic photograph showcases both the technological advancements achieved during its time and highlights how public transportation can positively impact urban areas like Greater London.
