EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of jubilation and pride during the anniversary celebrations at Green Park House in Croydon, Greater London. Two men stand tall against the backdrop of the Prudential offices, releasing vibrant blue balloons into the sky. The occasion? The Chartered Institute of Buildings' 150th anniversary. The year was 1984, designated as the building industry's Year of Building to commemorate significant milestones such as the 75th anniversary of the Institute of Structural Engineers, and both the Royal Institute of British Architects and Chartered Institute of Building's 150th anniversaries. To mark this special year, the CIOB launched its Building Tomorrows Heritage campaign. During June to September, an initiative called Go Site-Seeing encouraged people to visit various building sites and assess their quality in terms of skillful management, manpower, and manufacture. Laing Construction actively participated by opening several sites to public scrutiny including Green Park House itself along with The Lanes Shopping Centre in Carlisle and The Northern General Hospital in Sheffield. This remarkable photograph not only showcases a momentous celebration but also serves as a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship that has shaped our built environment for generations. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, it stands as a reminder that buildings are not merely structures but living testaments to human ingenuity and progress.
