Minories Car Park JLP01_08_083502
Minories Car Park, 1 Shorter Street, City of London. Minories Car Park from the south east.
Steel reinforcement bars have been left exposed in places. These were to tie into the structure of future phases of building at the site. The foundations of the car park were built to support the addition of two ten storey blocks extending from the roof. It was planned that these would be halls of residence for the City University. Located at 1 Shorter Street in the City of London, this multi-storey car park from the 1970s stands tall against the backdrop of a bustling cityscape. The image showcases exposed steel reinforcement bars that were strategically left visible to connect with future phases of construction on-site. These bars were intended to support two ten-storey blocks that would have extended from the car park's roof, serving as halls of residence for City University students. The foundations of this impressive structure were meticulously designed to accommodate these planned additions, showcasing the foresight and vision behind its creation. The photograph offers a unique perspective from the southeast, allowing viewers to appreciate both the intricate details and grand scale of this architectural marvel. While it may no longer serve its original purpose as a car park, this historic landmark continues to stand as a testament to urban development and innovation. Its significance lies not only in its functional design but also in its contribution to shaping London's skyline. Through this print by A© Historic England Archive, we are transported back in time, capturing a glimpse into an era where road transport was rapidly evolving alongside ambitious architectural projects like Minories Car Park.
