St Thomas Hospital: A Symbol of Healing and Progress in the 1970s This photograph, taken in the 1970s, showcases the central avenue of St Thomas Hospital in Lambeth, London. The image is framed by the four new blocks that were part of Phase II of the hospital's rebuilding project, which began in 1969 and was completed in 1975. The hospital sign proudly stands in the foreground, marking the entrance to this esteemed healthcare institution. Phase II of St Thomas Hospital's rebuilding project was a significant undertaking, with Laing overseeing the construction of a new ward block, operating suites, outpatients department, research institute, nurses home, and nurses training school. This expansion built upon the foundation laid by Phase I, which had been completed in 1966 by Sir Robert McAlpine and Sons. Phase III of the project was planned to commence in 1975, continuing the hospital's commitment to providing advanced healthcare facilities and accommodations for its staff. The symmetry of the buildings in the photograph reflects the order and precision that are essential in a healthcare environment. The 1970s marked a period of innovation and progress in healthcare, and St Thomas Hospital stood at the forefront of these advancements. This photograph serves as a testament to the hospital's enduring mission to provide quality care and contribute to the health and welfare of the community." (Historic England Archive, Joh) © 2023.
