EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the construction of The Bridgewater Hall, located in Barbirolli Square, Manchester. As we peer over the auditorium, we witness the meticulous installation of fittings that will bring this concert venue to life. From seats to lights and even a steel tensioning structure suspended from the ceiling, every detail is carefully considered. Designed as the permanent home for the renowned Halle Orchestra, The Bridgewater Hall has been a labor of love since its inception in September 1993. Topped out in March 1995 and officially opened in September 1996, this magnificent building stands as a testament to architectural brilliance and dedication. The interior of the auditorium was thoughtfully designed with consultation from Arup Acoustics to ensure optimal sound quality. A remarkable feature lies within its 2,400 seats - they were ingeniously crafted to reflect sound equally whether occupied or empty. This attention to detail ensures an unparalleled auditory experience for all who enter these hallowed halls. As fairy lights delicately illuminate the space with warmth and enchantment during this stage of construction captured by Historic England Archive's lens, one can only imagine how awe-inspiring it must be when filled with music-loving patrons. This photograph serves as a reminder of both human ingenuity and artistic expression coming together harmoniously within these walls.
