EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, located in Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. The image showcases Sir William Doughty and John Allen crouched beside a coniferous sprig planted in concrete during the topping out ceremony. Laing Management Contracting played a crucial role in building this new teaching hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The project utilized fast track construction techniques, enabling its completion within an impressive timeframe of less than five years. It is worth noting that the hospital was constructed on the site where St Stephens Hospital once stood before being demolished earlier in 1989. At the time this photograph was taken, Sir William Doughty held the position of Chairman for the North West Thames Regional Health Authority, while John Allen served as Chairman of Laing Management. Their presence at this ceremony signifies their pivotal roles in overseeing and contributing to this monumental healthcare infrastructure project. The significance of this event is further highlighted by Queen Elizabeth II herself officially opening Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on May 13th, 1993. This print serves as a testament to both the dedication put forth by those involved in its construction and its importance within London's healthcare landscape during the 1990s.
