CHELSEA AND WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL, FULHAM ROAD, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. Pam Castro smoothing the last batch of concrete during the topping out of the staff accommodation at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Pam Castro was Director of Estates for North West Thames Regional Health Authority. Standing behind her on the left is Brian Zelly, Joint Managing Director of Laing Management. On the right is Bill Anstead; Managing Director at Christiani & Nielsen.
Laing Management Contracting worked on the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The new teaching hospital was built on the site of the old St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in the early months of 1989. The use of fast track construction techniques enabled the entire project to be completed in less than 5 years. The hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 13 May 1993

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic topping out ceremony of the staff accommodation at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. In the image, Pam Castro can be seen meticulously smoothing the last batch of concrete, symbolizing a significant milestone in the construction process. As Director of Estates for North West Thames Regional Health Authority, Castro played a crucial role in overseeing this ambitious project. Standing beside her is Brian Zelly, Joint Managing Director of Laing Management, who worked alongside Christiani & Nielsen's Managing Director Bill Anstead to bring this vision to life. Laing Management Contracting was entrusted with constructing the state-of-the-art hospital on behalf of the health authority between 1989 and 1993. The hospital itself was built on the site where St Stephens Hospital once stood before being demolished earlier that year. Thanks to innovative fast track construction techniques employed throughout its development, this remarkable teaching hospital was completed in less than five years. On May 13th, 1993, Queen Elizabeth II officially inaugurated Chelsea and Westminster Hospital as a testament to modern engineering and healthcare excellence. This photograph serves as a timeless reminder of not only an impressive architectural achievement but also highlights individuals like Pam Castro whose dedication brought this vital medical facility into existence.
