Ross Street, Devonport, City of Plymouth. A group of dignitaries stood outside the 2000th post-war Easiform dwelling in Plymouth on its ceremonial opening day, with a crowd of people in the foreground who have gathered to watch.
The 2, 000th Easiform dwelling in Plymouth was a ground floor flat in a three-storey block of flats on Ross Street. The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Alderman Sir J. Clifford Tozer, ceremonially opened the flat after it was officially handed over by Sir William Kirby Laing to the Chairman of the Housing Committee. According to the November 1953 edition of the companys newsletter Team Spirit, 2603 of the 7107 post-war houses constructed in Plymouth for the City Council were built by Laing, of which 2000 were in Easiform construction. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the 1950s in Plymouth, where a momentous occasion is taking place. A group of distinguished individuals stands proudly outside the 2000th post-war Easiform dwelling on Ross Street, Devonport. The significance of this event is palpable as a crowd gathers in the foreground, eagerly observing the ceremonial opening. The ground floor flat within a three-storey block represents an important milestone for Plymouth's housing development. As Alderman Sir J. Clifford Tozer, Lord Mayor of Plymouth, prepares to officially open the flat, it symbolizes progress and hope for a brighter future after the devastation of war. Sir William Kirby Laing hands over the keys to the Chairman of the Housing Committee amidst great anticipation and pride. This achievement highlights Laing's significant contribution to rebuilding Plymouth after World War II. According to records from Team Spirit newsletter in November 1953, Laing constructed an impressive total of 2,603 out of 7,107 post-war houses for Plymouth City Council. This photograph not only captures an important historical moment but also reflects society's collective efforts towards providing affordable and comfortable housing for its citizens during challenging times. It serves as a reminder that even amidst adversity, communities can come together and create lasting legacies that shape our cities' landscapes today.
