Aylesbury Estate, Walworth, Southwark, Greater London. Looking north-west over the Aylesbury Estate, showing the Centre Building with its 170ft chimney and Taplow House, a 14-storey block of flats on the right.
Laings Southern Region started building the Aylesbury Estate in 1967. At the time it was the largest industrialised housing scheme ever undertaken by a London Borough, providing homes for more than 7000 people, comprising of low and high-rise linear blocks from four to fourteen-storeys high containing flats and maisonettes, built using the 12M Jespersen system. The Centre Building with its attached chimney, shown in the foreground, included boiler rooms, a boys club and community centre. The photograph has been taken from the roof of high-rise flats on Thurlow Street

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth, Southwark, Greater London during the 1970s. Looking north-west over the estate, the image showcases two prominent structures - the Centre Building and Taplow House. The Centre Building stands tall with its remarkable 170ft chimney, housing boiler rooms, a boys club, and a community center within its walls. On the right side of the frame is Taplow House, an impressive 14-storey block of flats. Built by Laings Southern Region in 1967, this housing estate was a groundbreaking project for its time. It represented one of London's largest industrialized housing schemes undertaken by a borough council. Designed to accommodate more than 7000 residents, it consisted of both low-rise and high-rise linear blocks ranging from four to fourteen storeys high. These flats and maisonettes were constructed using the innovative 12M Jespersen system. The photographer has skillfully captured this urban landscape from atop high-rise flats on Thurlow Street. The composition offers a unique perspective that highlights not only the architectural elements but also provides insight into how these buildings integrated into their surroundings. This historic photograph serves as an important record of social development and architecture during that era. It showcases how large-scale housing projects aimed to provide homes for communities while incorporating essential amenities such as community centers within their design framework.
