EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Aylesbury Estate in Walworth, Southwark, Greater London during its construction phase. Taken from a panoramic view in the north-west direction, the image showcases the magnitude of this housing project. Laings Southern Region commenced building this colossal estate in 1967, marking it as one of the largest industrialized housing schemes ever undertaken by a London Borough at that time. Designed to accommodate over 7000 individuals, this development comprises both low and high-rise linear blocks ranging from four to fourteen-storeys high. The flats and maisonettes were constructed using the innovative 12M Jespersen system. The photograph potentially originates from atop Studland tower block situated at the intersection of Portland Street with Trafalgar Street in Walworth. The image offers an intriguing glimpse into post-war urban development efforts and highlights how cranes dotted across the landscape played a pivotal role in shaping this ambitious project. With its roofscape dominating the frame, one can appreciate both the scale and complexity involved in creating such an expansive housing estate. This historical snapshot serves as a testament to architectural progress and social change within London's cityscape during the 1960s. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive, it provides valuable insight into past endeavors aimed at providing homes for communities while transforming urban landscapes for generations to come.
