Restell Close, Greenwich,
Greater London. Looking up at a Sectra block of residential nurses flats on Restell Close, showing a group of women looking out over a balcony.
This residential block for nurses was one of three 10-storey, H-shaped blocks, built by Laings Construction Company for the South-East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board, using the Sectra system. The flats were built on a high point just off Vanbrugh Hill with views over Greenwich, Deptford and the River Thames, providing self-contained flats of three and four rooms for nurses who worked at Greenwich Hospital. The blocks were named Jenner House, Lister House and Norfolk House. In 2007, two of the blocks were demolished and Norfolk House was reclad and subsequently renamed Leamington Court. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures a moment in time at Restell Close, Greenwich, Greater London. The image showcases the impressive Sectra block of residential nurses flats, with a group of women gathered on a balcony, gazing out over the stunning views. Constructed by Laings Construction Company for the South-East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board, these three 10-storey H-shaped blocks were built using the innovative Sectra system. Situated on a high point just off Vanbrugh Hill, these self-contained flats provided comfortable accommodation for nurses working at Greenwich Hospital. The blocks were aptly named Jenner House, Lister House and Norfolk House and offered three to four-room apartments for the dedicated healthcare professionals. With their strategic location overlooking Greenwich, Deptford and the majestic River Thames, these flats provided not only functional housing but also breathtaking vistas. Although two of the blocks met their fate in 2007 and were demolished, Norfolk House underwent recladding and was subsequently renamed Leamington Court. This print serves as a testament to an era when industrialized building techniques like concrete construction revolutionized architecture. Preserved by Historic England Archive with utmost care and attention to detail, this image encapsulates both the architectural significance of this unique residential complex as well as its role in providing essential housing for hardworking nurses during the 1960s.
