Perronet Thompson School JLP01_10_36842
Perronet Thompson School, Wawne Road, Bransholme, City of Kingston upon Hull. The interior of the sports hall at Perronet Thompson School with nets set up for cricket practice, showing the glazed barrel vaulted ceiling.
Laings Yorkshire Region division began work on site in September 1986 and the building was completed in June 1988. Bransholme was one of the largest local authority housing estates in Britain at the time and the school was equipped with enhanced facilities for the use of the whole community. These included the larger lending library, the Bransholme Theatre, meetings rooms, a gymnasium and courtyard tearooms. The school was named for the Kingston upon Hull born parliamentarian Thomas Perronet Thompson (1783-1869), a governor of Sierra Leone and activist against the Corn Laws. It closed in 1999 and reopened as Kingswood College of Arts but was demolished in 2011 and replaced on the same site by a new building, the Kingswood Academy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the interior of Perronet Thompson School's sports hall in all its glory. The nets are meticulously set up for cricket practice, while the glazed barrel vaulted ceiling adds a touch of grandeur to the space. Constructed by Laings Yorkshire Region division between September 1986 and June 1988, this school was an integral part of Bransholme, one of Britain's largest local authority housing estates at that time. Its purpose extended beyond education, as it boasted enhanced facilities for the entire community to enjoy. These included a lending library, Bransholme Theatre, meeting rooms, gymnasium, and even courtyard tearooms. Named after Thomas Perronet Thompson (1783-1869), a notable parliamentarian from Kingston upon Hull who fought against the Corn Laws and served as governor of Sierra Leone, this school held great historical significance. Although it closed its doors in 1999 and reopened as Kingswood College of Arts before being demolished in 2011, this photograph serves as a reminder of its architectural beauty and importance within the community.
