TEBAY, EDEN, CUMBRIA. A view of the construction of the M6 Motorway through the Lune Gorge, showing the building of a bridge across the River Lune, probably the Roger Howe bridge which carries the A685 across the river.
The work on the Lune Gorge section of the M6 Motorway between Killington and Tebay (Junction 37 - Junction 38) was carried out by John Laing Construction Ltd. Work started in October 1967 and the motorway was opened to traffic in October 1970. On this stretch of the M6, 20 bridges and 17 culverts were built across rivers and streams. The Roger Howe bridge is located at the grid reference NY and carries the A685 across the River Lune. Continuing along this road is the Lawtland House viaduct which carries the A685 over the M6, see also JLP01/08/079762

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Bridging the Lune" offers a glimpse into the remarkable construction of the M6 Motorway through the picturesque Lune Gorge in Tebay, Eden, Cumbria. The image showcases the meticulous building of a bridge across the majestic River Lune, believed to be the renowned Roger Howe bridge that carries the A685 over this waterway. The ambitious project was undertaken by John Laing Construction Ltd. , commencing in October 1967 and culminating with its opening to traffic in October 1970. This particular section of the M6 required an impressive feat of engineering, resulting in the creation of 20 bridges and 17 culverts spanning various rivers and streams along its path. Located at grid reference NY6129602758, nestled amidst a serene rural landscape, stands the iconic Roger Howe bridge. Its sturdy structure not only facilitates smooth vehicular movement but also adds architectural charm to this idyllic region. Further along this road lies another notable landmark - Lawtland House viaduct - which gracefully carries A685 overpassing above M6 motorway. This photograph beautifully captures both man-made marvels against nature's backdrop; showcasing civil engineering excellence intertwined with breathtaking scenery. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance while harmoniously blending modern infrastructure within its natural surroundings.
