EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the monumental construction of the M6 Motorway as it traverses through the picturesque Lune Gorge near Jeffreys Mount in Cumbria. The image showcases a remarkable scene, with the motorway elegantly crossing over the River Lune, while a temporary bailey bridge for the haul road stands prominently in the foreground. In the distance, huts and a batching plant can be seen against a backdrop of rolling hills. The work on this section of the M6 Motorway was undertaken by John Laing Construction Ltd. , commencing in October 1967 and culminating in its opening to traffic three years later in October 1970. This particular stretch required immense engineering prowess, resulting in the creation of 20 bridges and 17 culverts across various rivers and streams. The photograph not only highlights significant civil engineering achievements but also offers an insight into rural landscapes transformed by modern road transport infrastructure. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination to connect communities through efficient transportation networks. Captured by A© Historic England Archive, this image is an invaluable historical document that preserves both technical expertise and natural beauty. It reminds us of our ability to shape our surroundings while harmonizing with nature's splendor.
