Bridge at sunset JLP01_10_29981
SEVERN BRIDGE, M48, AUST, SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE. The Severn Bridge at sunset, seen during strengthening work done by Laing.
The original design and construction of the Severn Bridge had under estimated the increased volume of traffic since its completion in 1966 and whilst built to last 120 years it was found to require remedial work after just 20. Laing Industrial Engineering & Construction won the £ 29.5m contract from the Department of Transport and strengthening work on all elements of the structure began in May 1987. The project was completed in April 1990 in the same year that Laing jointly won the contract for the construction of the second Severn Crossing that would take the traffic pressure off the first bridge and extend its lifespan even further

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of the Severn Bridge at sunset, as it undergoes strengthening work by Laing Industrial Engineering & Construction. Originally built in 1966, the bridge's design had not anticipated the significant increase in traffic volume over the years. Consequently, remedial measures were required just two decades later. Awarded a £29.5 million contract by the Department of Transport, Laing commenced their comprehensive project in May 1987 to reinforce all aspects of this iconic structure. The endeavor aimed to extend its lifespan and alleviate traffic pressure with the construction of a second Severn Crossing. The photograph showcases a stunning night scene that exudes an atmospheric ambiance. The warm hues of sunset cast enchanting light and shadow across both land and water, creating a truly magical setting. As we admire this image from Historic England Archive, we are reminded not only of human ingenuity but also our ability to adapt and overcome challenges presented by time and progress. This snapshot serves as a testament to engineering excellence while highlighting the ever-changing landscape shaped by road transport infrastructure.
