Bridge tower JLP01_10_29355
SEVERN BRIDGE, M48, AUST, SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE. A view looking up at from the base of one of the towers of the Severn Bridge, seen during strengthening work done by Laing.
The original design and construction of the Severn Bridge had under estimated the increased volume of traffic since its completion in 1966 and whilst built to last 120 years it was found to require remedial work after just 20. Laing Industrial Engineering & Construction won the £ 29.5m contract from the Department of Transport and strengthening work on all elements of the structure began in May 1987. The project was completed in April 1990 in the same year that Laing jointly won the contract for the construction of the second Severn Crossing that would take the traffic pressure off the first bridge and extend its lifespan even further

1980s Angular Bridge Motorway Perspective Steel
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring view from the base of one of the towers of the iconic Severn Bridge. The image showcases the bridge during a period of strengthening work undertaken by Laing Industrial Engineering & Construction in the 1980s. Originally completed in 1966, it became evident that the bridge had underestimated the surge in traffic volume, necessitating remedial action after just two decades. The ambitious project to reinforce all elements of this steel marvel commenced in May 1987 and was successfully concluded in April 1990. This endeavor cost £29.5 million and was commissioned by the Department of Transport. Coincidentally, Laing also secured a contract for constructing another engineering marvel -the second Severn Crossing- which would alleviate traffic pressure on its predecessor while extending its lifespan. The photograph beautifully captures both perspective and angularity as it invites viewers to gaze upwards towards towering heights with admiration and curiosity. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination to overcome challenges posed by time and evolving needs. Preserved within Historic England Archive, this remarkable snapshot not only commemorates an important chapter in British infrastructure history but also reminds us of our capacity for progress and innovation when faced with obstacles along our journey towards a better future.
