COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, GEDLING ROAD, ARNOLD, GEDLING, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. Two workers guiding a Laingspan beam, lowered from a crane, into position on the roof of one of the blocks at Arnold County High School, during its construction.
Work began on the site in March 1958 and construction was completed for the new school term in September 1959. Laingspan was a flexible modular system of frame construction using precast pre-stressed concrete units. Laing developed the system in conjunction with the Architects and Buildings Branch of the Ministry of Education and consulting engineer A J Harris. The Arnold school was the first building for which the system was used beyond a prototype extension to Laings own Research and Development Centre. Designed to economise on steel consumption and minimise on wet trades to speed up construction, the system went on to be used for other building types including offices and hospitals

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Arnold County High School in Nottinghamshire during the late 1950s. Two dedicated workers can be seen carefully guiding a Laingspan beam, which has been lowered from a crane, into its designated position on the roof of one of the school blocks. The innovative Laingspan system, developed by Laing in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and consulting engineer A J Harris, revolutionized frame construction using precast pre-stressed concrete units. This particular project marked an important milestone for this flexible modular system as it was the first building where it was implemented beyond just being a prototype extension to Laing's own Research and Development Centre. Designed to optimize steel consumption and minimize reliance on wet trades, thereby expediting construction processes, this groundbreaking system would go on to find application in various other building types such as offices and hospitals. Work commenced at this site in March 1958 with completion achieved just in time for the new school term in September 1959. The dedication shown by these workers is evident as they play their part in shaping not only a physical structure but also contributing to educational development within their community. This remarkable image serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and progress within the field of construction during that era.
