Sealing the roof JLP01_08_053324

COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, GEDLING ROAD, ARNOLD, GEDLING, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. Two workers spreading hot tar to seal the joints between roof panels during the construction of Arnold County High School.
Work began on the site in March 1958 and construction was completed for the new school term in September 1959. Laingspan was a flexible modular system of frame construction using precast pre-stressed concrete units. Laing developed the system in conjunction with the Architects and Buildings Branch of the Ministry of Education and consulting engineer A J Harris. The Arnold school was the first building for which the system was used beyond a prototype extension to Laings own Research and Development Centre. Designed to economise on steel consumption and minimise on wet trades to speed up construction, the system went on to be used for other building types including offices and hospitals

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Arnold County High School in Nottinghamshire. Two dedicated workers can be seen diligently spreading hot tar to seal the joints between roof panels, ensuring a watertight and secure structure. The photograph dates back to the late 1950s when work began on this groundbreaking project. The school was completed just in time for the new academic year in September 1959, showcasing remarkable efficiency and dedication from all involved. What makes this construction particularly noteworthy is the implementation of Laingspan, a revolutionary modular system of frame construction using precast pre-stressed concrete units. Developed by Laing alongside experts from the Ministry of Education and consulting engineer A J Harris, this innovative system aimed to reduce steel consumption and accelerate construction by minimizing wet trades. Arnold County High School became one of the first buildings where Laingspan was utilized beyond its prototype stage at Laing's own Research and Development Centre. This pioneering approach would later be adopted for various building types including offices and hospitals. This print not only showcases hardworking individuals sealing crucial joints but also represents an era marked by educational progress, architectural innovation, and efficient construction practices. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity during an exciting period of development in education infrastructure.
