Naming ceremony JLP01_09_752240
Graythorp, Hartlepool. A young woman carrying out the naming ceremony for the oil platform Graythorp II.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. The oil platform Graythorp I was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974 and on the weekend of 14th-15th June 1975, Graythorp II was named and floated out of the dock basin down the Seaton Channel to where it was handed over to its owners BP. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of marine engineering. The image showcases a young woman gracefully conducting the naming ceremony for the oil platform Graythorp II at the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock in Hartlepool, England. In the early 1970s, Laing Pipelines Offshore undertook an ambitious project to construct a dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. This facility played a crucial role in building fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's North Sea Oil Project. On Saturday, June 29th, 1974, their first creation, Graythorp I was launched with great success. The following year witnessed another milestone as Graythorp II was named and floated out of the dock basin down Seaton Channel before being handed over to its owners - BP. The photograph beautifully encapsulates this historic event that marked yet another achievement in offshore oil rig construction. Beyond its historical significance, this photo also offers glimpses into fashion trends of the era. The women present at this ceremony are seen wearing clothing styles typical of the 1970s. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this remarkable image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and innovation within marine engineering during that time period. It stands as a reminder of our ability to conquer new frontiers and push boundaries through collaborative efforts between industry leaders like Laing Pipelines Offshore and BP.
