Graythorp, Hartlepool. A view of the oil platform Graythorp II being floated away from Graythorp, on its journey along the Seaton Channel towards the North Sea.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. The oil platform Graythorp I was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974 and on the weekend of 14th-15th June 1975, Graythorp II was named and floated out of the dock basin down the Seaton Channel to where it was handed over to its owners BP. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the historic moment when the oil platform Graythorp II embarked on its journey from Graythorp, Hartlepool towards the vast expanse of the North Sea. Taken in the early 1970s, this image showcases Laing Pipelines Offshore's remarkable achievement in constructing a fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the renowned William Gray Shipyard. The construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's ambitious North Sea Oil Project took place within this very dry dock. The culmination of their efforts resulted in the launch of Graythorp I on June 29th, 1974, followed by an equally significant event a year later. On that fateful weekend of June 14th-15th, 1975, Graythorp II was christened and gracefully floated out of the dock basin along Seaton Channel. As it glides through tranquil waters towards its ultimate destination amidst offshore oil fields, this photograph encapsulates both engineering prowess and industrial ambition. Its significance lies not only in showcasing a pivotal moment for BP but also highlighting how human ingenuity has shaped our relationship with natural resources. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print serves as a testament to our rich industrial heritage while offering us a glimpse into an era defined by innovation and progress.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the pro-Indian attitude encountered in Shaws painting and Longfellows Hiawatha seems increasingly to have been supplanted by the notion of the savage as a menace. A striking example of the coarsening of this tendency and, at the same time, an indication of the kind of popularization the motif lent itself to, is provided by a set of six slides for stereopticon among the treasures of the American Antiquarian Society.
