Windrush Tower, Blackbird Leys, Oxford, Oxfordshire. The Mayor of Oxford, Alderman Lionel Harrison, cutting the tape at the ceremonial opening of Windrush Tower, a 15-storey block of flats in Blackbird Leys in Oxford.
Windrush Tower was ceremonially opened by the Mayor, Alderman Lionel Harrison, on 9th April 1962. The tower block contained 58 two-bedroom flats and two one-bedroom flats, and was celebrated as the highest domestic block of flats in Oxford at 155 feet. John Laing and Son Ltd simultaneously constructed a second 15-storey tower at the site called Evenlode Tower

The print captures a significant moment in the history of Blackbird Leys, Oxford. The Mayor of Oxford, Alderman Lionel Harrison, can be seen cutting the ceremonial tape at the opening ceremony of Windrush Tower. This 15-storey block of flats was a symbol of progress and modernity when it was unveiled on April 9th, 1962. Windrush Tower stood tall as the highest domestic block of flats in all of Oxford, reaching an impressive height of 155 feet. Constructed by John Laing and Son Ltd. , this architectural marvel consisted of 58 two-bedroom flats and two one-bedroom flats. The event itself was filled with excitement and pride as local residents gathered to witness this historic occasion.
