EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures an interior view of Queensgate Shopping Centre in the City of Peterborough during the 1980s. The image was taken from the Central Square escalator, showcasing the entrance to British Home Stores. The construction of Queensgate Centre began in 1975 after Laing won the contract for this ambitious project. However, due to various planning enquiries and design changes, work on the centre was delayed until its inauguration ceremony in April 1978. This multi-level shopping complex was meticulously designed with a spacious car park and a brand new bus station. Upon its completion, Queensgate Centre became home to several renowned retailers such as John Lewis, British Home Stores, and Littlewoods who occupied some of the larger stores within the facility. With its diverse range of shops and amenities, it quickly became a popular destination for shoppers seeking retail therapy or leisurely outings. Finally opening its doors to eager visitors on March 9th, 1982, Queensgate Centre has since become an iconic symbol of trade and commerce in Peterborough. This historic photograph not only showcases bustling shoppers but also highlights how this vibrant shopping centre played a significant role in shaping local retail culture during that era.
