London Fields Lido PLA01_03_0280
London Fields Lido, London Fields West Side, Hackney, Hackney, Greater London. An elevated view of the London Fields Lido, Hackney, seen from the west, with steam rising from the water and snow covering the surrounding park.
London Fields Lido was opened in 1932 and was the second outdoor pool to be opened by London County Council. It closed in 1988 and became derelict. After £ 2.5 million of refurbishments by Space & Place Architects (S+P Architects), the pool was re-opened in 2006. This photograph was probably taken from the tower block of 1-46 Morland Estate on London Fields West Road. The pool is heated and the water is kept at a constant 25 degrees, and therefore steam rises from the pool on cold days

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting beauty of London Fields Lido, located in Hackney, Greater London. Taken from an elevated viewpoint, the image showcases the lido surrounded by a snowy landscape and steam rising from its heated waters. The pool's rich history dates back to its opening in 1932 as the second outdoor pool established by London County Council. However, after years of neglect, it fell into disrepair until Space & Place Architects undertook a remarkable £2.5 million refurbishment project that culminated in its reopening in 2006. The photograph likely originated from the tower block of 1-46 Morland Estate on London Fields West Road, providing a unique perspective on this urban oasis. Despite the wintry conditions depicted here, visitors can enjoy swimming all year round thanks to the constant temperature maintenance at a cozy 25 degrees Celsius. London Fields Lido is not just an ordinary swimming pool; it represents a space for sport and recreation within an urban setting. Its vibrant blue hues contrast beautifully with the misty surroundings, creating an ethereal atmosphere that beckons both locals and tourists alike. Simon Inglis expertly captured this momentous scene through his lens for Historic England's collection. This evocative print serves as a testament to how architectural restoration can revive cherished landmarks while preserving their historical significance for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.
