Birmingham International Airport, Elmdon, Birmingham, Bickenhill, Solihull, West Midlands. The interior of the central well in the new terminal building at Birmingham International Airport after its opening, showing passengers in front of a row of check-in desks.
Construction of a new terminal building and piers, extensions to runways, and a new Maglev system at Birmingham Airport began in May 1981. The new terminal building was located on the opposite side of the site to the existing terminal at Elmdon. It was built using a structural steel frame around a central well, with precast floor and roof units, and was clad in glassfibre reinforced concrete. The three-storey building had a floor area of 16, 000 sq metres. It was later known as Terminal 1. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the bustling interior of the new terminal building at Birmingham International Airport in the 1980s. After years of construction, this state-of-the-art facility opened its doors to passengers, offering a glimpse into the future of air travel. The central well, showcased in this image, serves as the heart of the terminal. Its sleek design features a structural steel frame adorned with glassfibre reinforced concrete cladding, creating an atmosphere that exudes modernity and sophistication. Passengers can be seen lining up at a row of check-in desks, eagerly awaiting their flights to destinations unknown. With its three-storey layout and expansive floor area spanning 16,000 square meters, Terminal 1 quickly became a hub for international travel. This architectural marvel was part of a larger project that included extensions to runways and even introduced a cutting-edge Maglev system to enhance efficiency and convenience for travelers. As we gaze upon this photograph today, it transports us back in time to an era when air travel was on the cusp of transformation. It reminds us that airports are not merely gateways; they are symbols of progress and human connection across borders. Let this image serve as a testament to our enduring desire for exploration and adventure - forever etched within Birmingham International Airport's rich history.
