Burnham Low Lighthouse BAR03_01_501
Burnham Low Lighthouse, Foreshore, Gore Road, Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge, Sedgemoor, Somerset. A view of Burnham Low Lighthouse from the east, photographed in 1956 or 1957. Burnham Low Lighthouse was built in 1832 in conjuction with the High Lighthouse (deactivated in the 1990s), both of which were intended to replace the Round Tower (operational until 1832). The Low Lighthouse stands on nine wooden piers. It is whitewashed, with a red vertical stripe on the seaward side, and a black horizontal band on the landward side. The lights were not active between 1969 and 1993; when the High Lighthouse was deactivated the lights of the Low Lighthouse were reinstated

Blue Coastal Light House Lighthouse Post Medieval Seaside
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the picturesque coastal town of Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset, England. Captured in 1956 or 1957 by photographer Norman Barnard, it showcases the iconic Burnham Low Lighthouse from an eastern perspective. Built in 1832 alongside its counterpart, the High Lighthouse (now deactivated), this post-medieval structure replaced the Round Tower that had served as a navigational aid until then. Standing on nine sturdy wooden piers, the whitewashed Low Lighthouse features a striking red vertical stripe facing the sea and a contrasting black horizontal band on its landward side. Interestingly, between 1969 and 1993, these lights were not active. However, when the High Lighthouse was decommissioned in the 1990s, they were reinstated at their rightful place atop this charming lighthouse on legs. The image beautifully captures both historical significance and architectural beauty. The serene blue backdrop of sky and sea adds to its allure. This print serves as a timeless reminder of Burnham-on-Sea's rich maritime heritage and stands as a testament to human ingenuity in creating structures that guide ships safely along treacherous coastlines. Whether you're an admirer of lighthouses or simply appreciate capturing moments frozen in time through photography, this print is sure to evoke nostalgia for simpler times spent by the seaside.
