EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the timeless charm of the billiard hall in the historic Boleyn Tavern, located on Barking Road in Upton Park, Newham. Stepping into this Grade II listed establishment is like taking a journey back in time to its construction period between 1899 and 1900. The focal point of this remarkable room is undoubtedly the large painted roof light that gracefully illuminates the pool table below. The intricate stained glass design adds an elegant touch to the space, creating a mesmerizing interplay of light and color. It's as if players are engaged in a game under a celestial canopy. Originally designed by W G Shoebridge and H W Rising as a billiard hall, this space underwent restoration work from 2020 to 2021, transforming it into a charming dining room while preserving its historical significance. This transformation speaks volumes about how cherished heritage can seamlessly blend with modernity. As you gaze at this photograph, you can almost hear the clinking of billiard balls and feel the vibrant energy that once filled these walls. This image captures not only an architectural gem but also embodies sport and recreation within pub culture—a place where friends gather for friendly competition and camaraderie. Simon Inglis has masterfully captured both the grandeur of Victorian architecture and the spirit of community found within these hallowed halls.
