The original Highgate Station, looking north, in 1890s

Highgate's original overground station was constructed by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway. Immediately before it opened in 1867 the line was purchased by the Great Northern Railway (GNR), It was built in a deep cutting with twin tunnels to the north and south of the new station. In the late 1930's London Transport planned to electrify this line, from Finsbury Park to Alexandra Park, and incorporate it into the Tube network. It was intended that Highgate would be the interchange station between the old GNR line and the new Northern Line extension line from Archway to High Barnet. The demands of the Second World War led to the abandonment of the electrification of the GNR line and it was closed in the 1960's

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the original Highgate Station, captured in the 1890s. Constructed by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway, this overground station was a testament to Victorian engineering prowess. Just before its opening in 1867, the Great Northern Railway (GNR) acquired the line and took charge of its operations. Nestled within a deep cutting adorned with twin tunnels to both its north and south sides, Highgate Station stood as an architectural marvel. Its grandeur attracted commuters from far and wide who marveled at its impressive design. Intriguingly, plans were set in motion during the late 1930s for London Transport to electrify this historic railway line between Finsbury Park and Alexandra Park. The intention was to seamlessly integrate it into the Tube network while making Highgate Station a vital interchange point between the old GNR line and the new Northern Line extension from Archway to High Barnet. However, as fate would have it, World War II disrupted these ambitious plans. The demands of war led to the abandonment of electrification efforts on the GNR line. Consequently, this once bustling station met its demise in the 1960s when it closed down permanently. Today, this evocative print serves as a nostalgic reminder of an era long gone but not forgotten—a testament to human ingenuity that shaped our transportation networks through time.
