During the 1st Afghan War (1838-1842) Captain (later Major-General Sir) Thomas Seaton served with the 35th [Bengal] Native Infantry. He was brave and resourceful, but he was probably best remembered by his fellow officers during the siege of Jalalabad for constructing a still from old washpots and a musket barrel. I supplied every member of our mess with a small quantity of spirits for two months, but it was hard work.
As well as receiving the campaign medal awarded to the illustrious garrison at Jalalabad, Seaton was made CB and given the local rank of major on 4 October 1842.
