EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the Army Gold Medal with two clasps: Salamanca and Vittoria, awarded to Major General Sir John Ormsby Vandeleur. This prestigious medal represents his remarkable achievements as a military leader during the Peninsular War in the early 19th century. Vandeleur's role as commander of a light infantry brigade was crucial in several significant battles, including the capture of Ciudad Rodrigo and the fierce conflicts at Salamanca, Vittoria, and the Nive. His strategic brilliance and unwavering dedication to duty played a pivotal role in securing victory for Wellington's army. However, it was at the Battle of Waterloo where Vandeleur truly showcased his exceptional leadership skills. After Earl of Uxbridge was wounded, he assumed overall command of all cavalry forces in Wellington's army. Vandeleur's brigade of light cavalry played a vital role in rescuing British heavy cavalry from their overzealous pursuit of defeated enemy troops. This print serves as a testament to Vandeleur's bravery and skill on the battlefield. It symbolizes not only his personal accomplishments but also honors all officers, soldiers, infantrymen, and cavalrymen who have served their country selflessly throughout history. Displayed proudly at London's National Army Museum, this image allows us to appreciate both the historical significance of this distinguished medal and its rightful place within our collective memory.
