EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing Pythagoras, the renowned Greek philosopher and mathematician, at the center of attention. In this 13th-century illustration from an Arabic translation of Dioscorides' "De materia medica". Pythagoras is depicted imparting his wisdom to eight other esteemed physicians. Among them are Galen, a prominent physician during the Roman Empire known for his groundbreaking medical theories and practices, positioned at the bottom left corner; and Andromachus, physician to Emperor Nero, portrayed on the bottom right. The artwork originates from an Islamic school and beautifully showcases these wise men engaged in deep learning and instruction. It symbolizes the transmission of knowledge across cultures and generations as well as highlights the importance of education in medicine. Dioscorides himself was a botanist who served in Nero's army while Pherecydes of Syros was another notable figure present during this teaching session. The inclusion of Magnus adds further historical significance as he is credited with inventing theriac - a famous ancient remedy. Preserved by Oesterreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna, Austria, this vellum illustration offers us a glimpse into ancient traditions surrounding medicine and education. Through this portrait-like depiction of revered doctors gathered around Pythagoras' teachings, we can appreciate their contributions to medical treatises that have shaped our understanding today.
