The Council of Vienne, 1311-1312. 19th century (engraving)

7272480 The Council of Vienne, 1311-1312. 19th century (engraving); (add.info.: The Council of Vienne XV. Ecumenical Council convened by Clement V in Vienne, in it were examined the accusations against the Order of the Templars which in the previous phase, on 12 August 1308 with the action of Chinon, was declared not released but acquitted. From 16 October 1311 to 6 May 1312 Pope Clement V (1305-1314) opened the councils in 3 sessions. The Pope, during the Council, unable to oppose the will of the King of the Handsome Philip of France who imposed the elimination of the Templars in order to take possession of their immense patrimony, removed the order without condemning it or abolishing it, thanks to a clever artifice of the law canonical. 19th century recording from painting in the Vatican.); Fototeca Gilardi

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century engraving captures a pivotal moment in history - The Council of Vienne, convened by Pope Clement V in 1311-1312. This XV Ecumenical Council was called to examine the accusations against the Order of the Templars, following their previous acquittal in 1308. During the three sessions held from October 16, 1311, to May 6, 1312, Pope Clement V faced pressure from King Philip IV of France to eliminate the Templars and seize their vast wealth. Despite being unable to oppose the king's will, Pope Clement V cleverly removed the order without condemning or abolishing it through a legal loophole. This decision marked a turning point for the Templars and had far-reaching consequences for both religious and political spheres. The intricate details captured in this engraving bring to life the tension and drama that unfolded during this historic council. From accusations and denunciations to power struggles between church and state, every aspect is meticulously depicted with precision. As we gaze upon this print of The Council of Vienne, we are reminded of how even centuries-old events continue to resonate with significance today. It serves as a visual reminder of the complexities inherent in matters of faith, power, and justice.
