EDITORS COMMENTS
This cartoon print depicts the intricate politics of the Second Empire under Napoleon III, with a focus on the Duke of Morny, the Emperor's half-brother. The illustration, titled "Morny's soul ascending to heaven," portrays Morny as a dandy and gambler who was deeply involved in political affairs despite his personal struggles with debts. Serving as Minister of the Interior and presiding over the legislature until his untimely death in 1865, Morny was a key figure in Napoleon III's regime and was greatly mourned by the Emperor. Created by Frid'Rick for La Lanterne in February 1869, this engraving offers a satirical commentary on the power dynamics and personalities at play during this tumultuous period in French history. The detailed artwork captures not only Morny's complex character but also reflects broader themes of ambition, loyalty, and legacy within political circles. Part of the reedition "Napoleon dernier: Les Lanternes de l'Empire" from 1880-1881, this historical piece provides valuable insight into the Bonapartist regime through a unique artistic lens. Preserved in a private collection today, it serves as a reminder of France's rich political heritage and enduring fascination with its imperial past.
