The Angelic Child Presented to the ----- of Golconda, 1791 (hand-coloured engraving)

XCF306893 The Angelic Child Presented to the ----- of Golconda, 1791 (hand-coloured engraving) by English School, (18th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), Queen consort of George III of the United Kingdom; Queen Charlotte (left) seated in an armchair in profile to the right, avidly holds out a coral and bells with an insinuating air to a stout and mature woman dressed as a child, who holds a similar but larger toy to which are attached a number of money-bags (each inscribed 20.000 ) in place of bells. The fat Mrs. Schwellenberg leans over the back of the Queens chair, looking at the child with a greedy stare. The Queen says, " Bless me, dear Swellingbags, what divine harmony there is in that lovely Toy! Do, my pretty dear, make an exchange." Schwewellenberg says, " Tell her there is a monstrous fine Diamond in every Bell. And I have another in Germany I ll give her to boot." The child, holding her precious toy away from the Queen, answers, " Catch me at that if you can! an exchange indeed! no, no, tho a Child I m no Chicken!" 10 February 1791 Hand-coloured etching

The Angelic Child Presented to the Queen of Golconda, 1791

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this hand-coloured engraving from the 18th century, we witness a fascinating scene unfold before our eyes. The central figure is none other than Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, consort to King George III of the United Kingdom. Seated in an elegant armchair and depicted in profile, her eyes gleam with anticipation as she extends a coral and bells toy towards a peculiar woman dressed as a child. This stout and mature woman is revealed to be Mrs. Schwellenberg, known for her insatiable greed. Her gaze fixates on the child who holds a larger toy adorned with money-bags instead of bells - each bag inscribed with an astonishing sum of 20,000. With an air of cunning persuasion, Queen Charlotte entices Mrs. Schwellenberg by remarking on the divine harmony emanating from the lovely toy. She suggests making an exchange between their treasures while unaware that hidden diamonds lie within each bell. However, displaying remarkable wit beyond her years, the angelic child resists temptation and firmly declines Mrs. Schwellenberg's offer. Holding onto her precious possession tightly away from the queen's reach, she playfully declares herself no naive chicken but rather a clever child not easily fooled. This intricate etching captures not only historical figures but also reveals timeless themes such as greed and innocence clashing against one another in this whimsical moment frozen in time.
