Coat of arms copperplate 17th century Williams and Littlemore

This image is from a copperplate engraving, and shows part of a roll of arms from Richard Blomes (Britannia), an atlas published in 1673. It features the coats of arms of people who contributed towards the completion of the work - starting with King Charles II. Each page includes 35 coats of arms, presented here in pairs. These two coats of arms are from folios (pages) 23 and 24 of the work. In old English, ans appeared as a longs (which looks like an f), while ss appeared as fs. Com was an abbreviation for County. A number is assigned to each benefactor. Here are the accompanying texts (followed by modernised English where appropriate): 777 William WILLIAMS of Iohnby hall in Cumberland Gent. defcended from ye family of ye Williams of St. Nicholas in Glamorganfhire (Johnby hall; Glamorganshire) 812 Iohn LITTLEMORE of Hadley in Chefhire Gent. (John Littlemore; Hadley, Cheshire) From the same coat-of-arms series (many more available via blue link)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - a 17th-century copperplate engraving depicting the coat of arms of Williams and Littlemore. The image is extracted from Richard Blome's renowned atlas, "Britannia" published in 1673. This particular section features a roll of arms representing individuals who contributed to the completion of this esteemed work, commencing with King Charles II. Within each page, meticulously presented in pairs, are 35 coats of arms. These two specific coats belong to William Williams and John Littlemore, assigned numbers 777 and 812 respectively. It is fascinating to note that during that era, the letter 's' was depicted as 'f, ' while 'ss' appeared as 'fs. ' Additionally, abbreviations such as "com" were used for county. William Williams hails from Iohnby Hall in Cumberland and traces his lineage back to the prestigious Williams family of St. Nicholas in Glamorganshire (now known as Glamorganshire). On the other hand, John Littlemore proudly represents Hadley in Cheshire. This extraordinary series offers an insight into the intricate world of heraldry and serves as a testament to those who supported Blome's monumental undertaking. As we explore these ancient emblems brought to life through Whiteway's masterful reproduction techniques, we are transported back in time to an era where honor and lineage were celebrated through these magnificent symbols adorning noble families across England.
