From an architectural point of view it was with 6 Doric columns on the front and 15 on the sides. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Temple of Apollo, which stands as the most significant monument to have survived from the sanctuary of Apollo in Delphi. Steeped in mythical history, this temple is believed to have been constructed on the same sacred grounds where previous temples dedicated to Apollo once stood. Throughout different periods, it was built using laurel branches, beeswax, and copper. Dating back to 510 BC with generous contributions from Greek and foreign rulers, as well as support from the Alkmaionidon family of Athens, this architectural marvel boasted six Doric columns at its front and fifteen on each side. Adorned with exquisite sculptures attributed to Antinagora and adorned pediments depicting scenes featuring the god Apollo battling giants. Tragedy struck in 373 BC when a devastating earthquake nearly obliterated the temple. However, through a fundraising effort by the Sanctuary of Delphi, funds were collected for its reconstruction. The new design remained faithful to its predecessor's style with six columns at the front and fifteen on each side. Painted gables depicted acts performed by Androsthenes alongside scenes showcasing Apollo himself along with Dionysus and Muses. Captured beautifully by Dimitrios Tilis' lens, this print allows us a glimpse into ancient Greece's rich cultural heritage while highlighting both historical significance and architectural grandeur that continues to captivate admirers today.
