EDITORS COMMENTS
Ando Hiroshige's 'The Approach to the Night Attack' (Juichidanme ichi, yochi oshiyose) is a captivating color woodblock print from the series 'The Revenge of the Loyal Retainers' (Chushingura), created around 1834-39. This masterpiece depicts a pivotal moment in the legendary tale of the Loyal Forty-Seven Ronin, a group of samurai who avenged their lord's death by committing seppuku (ritual suicide) and then planning a nighttime attack on the man who had caused their master's demise. In this print, we see a group of men, dressed in traditional samurai attire, huddled together on a houseboat, preparing for their approach to the night attack. The bridge in the background is adorned with snow, adding a sense of stillness and tranquility to the scene, in stark contrast to the impending action. The boats in the foreground, with their lanterns lit, are ready to transport the ronin to their target. The cartouche at the bottom right of the print identifies the artist as Hiroshige I, also known as Ando Hiroshige or Utagawa Hiroshige. Hiroshige was a prominent figure in the artistic school of ukiyo-e, which focused on the depiction of everyday life and the natural world. His work is renowned for its vivid colors and meticulous attention to detail, making this print a stunning example of the artistic achievements of the Edo period (1603-1868) in Japan. This print is a testament to the enduring power of the Chushingura story, which has been passed down through literature, art, and theater for centuries. It is a reminder of the concept of loyalty and honor that was deeply ingrained in Japanese culture during this time and continues to inspire artists and audiences alike.
