Adelie Trying to Mother a Couple of Well-Grown Strangers, c1908, (1909)

Adelie Trying to Mother a Couple of Well-Grown Strangers, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Adelie Trying to Mother a Couple of Well-Grown Strangers" captures a remarkable moment in the life of Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton during his second Antarctic expedition from 1907 to 1909. Shackleton, known for his audacious spirit and relentless pursuit of exploration, made significant contributions to our understanding of this frozen continent. In this image, we witness an adorable encounter between Adelie penguins and Shackleton's team. These well-grown strangers find themselves under the watchful eye of an affectionate Adelie penguin who seems determined to mother them as her own. The scene is both heartwarming and comical, showcasing the unique animal behavior that can be observed in Antarctica. Shackleton's expeditions were marked by numerous achievements. During his second venture, he led his team further south than anyone had ever been before – reaching an astonishing latitude of 88° S, just shy of the South Pole itself. Additionally, they conquered Mount Erebus, one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes. Sadly, Shackleton's passion for discovery ultimately cost him his life during his third expedition. However, his legacy lives on through photographs like this one captured by unknown hands. This monochrome illustration was featured in "The Heart of the Antarctic". Volume I – a testament to Shackleton's indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to pushing boundaries in exploration. Let us cherish this snapshot as a reminder not only of Shackleton's extraordinary accomplishments but also as a celebration of the fascinating wildlife that inhabits these remote icy lands.
