EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historic moment in space exploration - the docking of the Space Shuttle Atlantis to Russia's Mir Space Station in 1995. Taken by the Mir-19 crew on July 4th, this image captures the awe-inspiring sight of Atlantis still connected to Mir. Cosmonauts Anatoliy Y. Solovyev and Nikolai M. Budarin, commander and flight engineer of Mir-19 respectively, temporarily undocked their Soyuz spacecraft from the cluster of Mir elements to perform a brief fly-around, enabling them to capture this remarkable photograph. Meanwhile, the STS-71 crew with three members from Mir-18 aboard Atlantis completed their joint activities. The significance of this event lies not only in its technological achievement but also in its political implications. It symbolizes international cooperation between two superpowers - America and Russia - as they worked together towards advancing space exploration. Intriguingly, solar panels can be seen adorning both Atlantis and Mir, highlighting humanity's growing reliance on renewable energy sources even beyond Earth's atmosphere. This print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our unyielding desire for discovery beyond our home planet. It is a reminder that through collaboration and innovation, we can push boundaries previously thought impossible. Creator: NASA
