Balaclava, the Scene of the Successful Cavalry Charge, 1854. Creator: Unknown

Balaclava, the Scene of the Successful Cavalry Charge, 1854. Crimean War. On the 25th October the Russians attacked the right of our position at break of day; the Turks, to whom the security of that portion of our lines was entrusted, ran away like a pack of cowards. The Russians took possession of the batteries held by them; and, thinking that none but Turks were opposed to them, made a dash across the plain intervening, with the 2nd Regiment of cavalry (2000 men), expecting to obtain possession of the town and harbour of Balaclava; but were astonished to find that, instead of Turks, they had the 93rd Highlanders to contend with; upon which they retired, and were charged by our Heavy Cavalry, in a splendid manner, and totally routed; leaving about forty men dead on the field, besides many wounded; our own loss at this charge being only some five or six killed, and about twenty wounded...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the scene of the successful cavalry charge during the Battle of Balaclava, which took place on October 25, 1854, during the Crimean War. The event is famously described in the quote from the "Illustrated London News" of 1854, which recounts the unexpected encounter between the Russian 2nd Regiment of Cavalry and the 93rd Highlanders of the British Army. The Russians, under the false assumption that they were facing only Turkish forces, made a bold advance towards Balaclava, intending to seize the town and harbor. However, they were taken aback to find the 93rd Highlanders instead, who put up a fierce resistance. In response, the British Heavy Cavalry charged with great vigor, resulting in the complete rout of the Russian cavalry. The Russians suffered heavy losses, with about forty men dead on the battlefield and many more wounded. The British sustained only minimal losses, with only a few killed and around twenty wounded. The photograph captures the aftermath of this pivotal moment in the Battle of Balaclava, with the chaos and confusion of the battlefield evident in the disarray of the Russian cavalry and the determined stance of the British soldiers. The scene is a testament to the bravery and tenacity of the soldiers involved and the turning point in the Crimean War.
