Bayeux Tapestry, 1070s
Bayeux Tapestry, 1070s. The tapestry, which tells the story of the events leading to the Battle of Hastings in 1066, was probably commissioned by Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, half-brother of William the Conqueror. This section shows Harold II (c1022-1066), last Anglo-Saxon king of England, on a visit to Normandy in 1064, swearing an oath of loyalty to William, then Duke of Normandy. Harold broke the oath when, following the death of Edward the Confessor, he claimed the throne of England. William responded by invading England, taking the crown after defeating Harold at Hastings

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a section of the renowned Bayeux Tapestry, created in the 1070s. Commissioned by Odo, Bishop of Bayeux and half-brother to William the Conqueror, this masterpiece vividly narrates the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. In this particular scene, we witness Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, embarking on a visit to Normandy in 1064. The tapestry captures an important moment as Harold swears an oath of loyalty to William, who was then Duke of Normandy. However, history reveals that Harold broke his solemn promise after claiming the English throne following Edward the Confessor's demise. This act triggered William's invasion of England and ultimately led to his victory over Harold at Hastings. Immersing ourselves in this remarkable artwork transports us back to medieval times when warfare and chivalry prevailed. The image portrays soldiers clad in armor mounted on majestic horses while sailing ships gracefully traverse nearby waters. It is a testament to both artistic skill and historical significance. As we delve into this extraordinary artifact from centuries past, it serves as a reminder of how power struggles shape nations and alter destinies. The Bayeux Tapestry continues to captivate audiences with its rich storytelling and intricate details—a true treasure that bridges our understanding between two pivotal figures: King Harold II and William the Conqueror.
