Catherine Howard, the Ill-Fated Rose - A Glimpse into Henry VIII's Fifth Queen Consort

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the essence of Catherine Howard, the ill-fated fifth wife of King Henry VIII. Dating back to 1935, this color portrait showcases a direct gaze from a woman whose life was marked by both beauty and tragedy. Catherine Howard, born between 1520 and 1525, ascended to the position of queen consort on July 28th, 1540. Known as the "rose without a thorn" she possessed an enchanting allure that captivated even the formidable king himself. However, her alleged adultery led to her tragic downfall. In this head and shoulders portrait, Catherine's headdress adds regal elegance to her appearance. The artist skillfully portrays her feminine grace and poise while capturing a sense of mystery in her eyes. The cigarette card format further emphasizes Catherine's significance within British history during the early twentieth century when it was produced by John Player & Sons in London. This piece is part of their renowned series "Kings & Queens of England - A Series of 50". As we admire this print today through Heritage Images' collection curated by The Print Collector, we are reminded not only of Catherine Howard's royal status but also how power dynamics shaped lives throughout history. Her story serves as a poignant reminder that even those closest to power can fall victim to its ruthless grip.
