Charles Alexandre de Calonne, (c1820s). Artist: Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse
Calonne, Charles Alexandre de Calonne, (c1820s). Calonne (1734-1802) was Controller-General of Finances under Louis XVI from 1783-1787. Frances finances were in a disastrous state and Calonne attempted to bring in a series of taxes and other measures intended to replenish the royal treasury. He failed to have his proposals implemented due to opposition from the assembly of notables and was dismissed, reluctantly, by the king, who supported his proposals. The failure to implement Calonnes financial reforms is seen by some historians as having been an important catalyst in the downfall of the monarchy in the French Revolution. Etienne Charles de Lomenie de Brienne (1727-1794) succeeded Calonne as finance minister in 1787, but was no more able to get reforms accepted than his predecessor and was compelled to resign the following year. Although he swore the civic oath required by the revolutionary constitution after the French Revolution, his status under the Ancien Regime made him the subject of suspicion and he was arrested in 1793 and died in prison the following year

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Charles Alexandre de Calonne, a prominent figure in French history during the 1820s. The artist behind this masterpiece is Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse, who skillfully captures the essence of Calonne's character and significance. Calonne served as Controller-General of Finances under Louis XVI from 1783 to 1787. During his tenure, France was grappling with dire financial circumstances, prompting Calonne to propose various taxes and measures aimed at replenishing the royal treasury. Unfortunately, his proposals faced strong opposition from the assembly of notables and were ultimately dismissed by the king himself, despite his initial support. The failure to implement Calonne's much-needed financial reforms is widely regarded by historians as a crucial catalyst in the eventual downfall of the monarchy during the French Revolution. His successor Etienne Charles de Lomenie de Brienne also struggled to gain acceptance for reform initiatives and resigned within a year. Despite swearing allegiance to revolutionary ideals after the French Revolution erupted, Calonne's privileged status under Ancien Régime made him subject to suspicion. In 1793, he was arrested and tragically died in prison a year later. This remarkable photograph serves as both a testament to Charles Alexandre de Calonne's significant role in shaping French history and an artistic tribute by Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse that immortalizes this influential figure for generations to come.
