City Hall, Chicago, USA, 1895. Creator: W &s Ltd

City Hall, Chicago, USA, 1895. Trams in front of the colonnaded exterior of City Hall, Randolph Street, Chicago, Illinois. The combined City Hall/County building was designed by James Egan. Construction started in 1875, and after many delays, was completed in 1885, but the building was beset with problems. In 1905, the foundations sank six inches, causing a gas pipe to rupture and resulting in an explosion that blew the roof off the building. City Hall, Chicago, USA, 1895 - A Glimpse into the Past

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the bustling streets of Chicago in 1895. Standing proudly on Randolph Street is the magnificent City Hall, a neo-classical architectural marvel designed by James Egan. The grand colonnaded exterior exudes elegance and power. In front of this iconic building, we see trams gracefully gliding along the avenue, transporting passengers through the heart of the city. These streetcars were an integral part of Chicago's transportation system during that era. However, behind its majestic facade lies a tumultuous history. Construction delays plagued City Hall since its inception in 1875 until its completion in 1885. Troubles continued when sinking foundations caused a devastating gas pipe rupture in 1905, resulting in a catastrophic explosion that blew off the roof. Captured from "Round the World in Pictures and Photographs" published by George Newnes Ltd. , London in 1895; this image offers us a glimpse into late 19th-century urban life with its monochrome charm and timeless appeal. As we gaze upon this historic photograph print today, it serves as a reminder of how cities evolve over time while preserving their unique heritage. It stands as a testament to both human ingenuity and resilience against adversity—a true tribute to Chicago's enduring spirit.
